If you are trying to eat healthier for you and your family, the first place to start is your refrigerator. Start by clearing out your freezer.  Some people get into the habit of just throwing food into the shopping cart without checking the nutritional facts.

This happens often with frozen foods, especially those that are labeled as "healthy" or "lite". Sure they are convenient, but a lot of frozen foods are packed with tons of calories, fat and sodium, which is not healthy for us or our kids. So dump out all the unhealthy frozen foods you have in your freezer and replace them with more low calorie foods, like bags of frozen veggies. Next is the fridge. What do you have hiding in there? How about creamy salad dressing? These are often not the best choice, even when it says “low-fat.” That’s because they usually include a lot of sugar, salt and artificial sweetener. Toss out that old creamy dressing and try making your own salad dressing with a touch of olive oil and vinegar. Not only will you eat healthier, you will suddenly have a lot more room in your fridge.  Check out the top 5 worst foods in your fridge.

    Flavored Yogurt

Some of your favorite strawberry, blueberry and vanilla yogurts have a typical 6-ounce serving of artificial flavoring in them, which is 3 times the sugar of plain yogurt. For a more healthier option, add some fresh berries or nuts to  plain full-fat yogurt. This way you will consume less sugar, more fiber, and a lot more nutrients.

    Soda

This is an obvious one. Soda is filled with tons of calories and has not a single value of nutrition. It’s best to do away with it. You can’t drink it, if it’s not in your fridge. If you like your drink with a little fizz, try drinking seltzer water with lemon for flavor.

    Hotdogs

They may be super tasty on the grill, but their health benefits are slim to none. Hot dogs are made out of processed meat, which allows them to last longer. Processed foods can lead to colorectal cancer and in some cases, stomach cancer. So toss them out, you’re better off eating hamburger.

    Tonic Water

Some people turn to tonic water as a healthy alternative to soda, but it’s not as healthy as you think. Even with that unique bitter taste, it still contains 124 calories per 12 ounce bottle. That’s almost the same as a bottle of cola, which is what we’re trying to avoid. For an alternative try some club soda and lime, taste great and has fewer calories.

    Pickles

I have a pickle to pick with you! No really, you may want to ditch those pickles in the back of the fridge. Majority of store bought pickles are loaded with salt, which contributes to weight gain in the long run. Try replacing them with sauerkraut, kimchi, or fermented cucumbers. They still have that satisfying tang you’re looking for with less salt.
