You need to earn a pretty good salary to be considered middle class in New Jersey.

The states with the highest middle class median were Maryland with $72,483, Alaska with $72,237 and New Jersey with $70,165.

The states with the lower middle class median were Mississippi with $37,963, Arkansas with $40,511 and West Virginia with $41,253.

Middle class numbers are found by households earning 67% - 200% of the states median income.
