Office workers are starting to prepare for annual office Christmas parties, but even though it’s a celebration - it’s still important to remain classy and professional.

An etiquette expert has shared the rules of behavior with the Daily Mail Online that should be followed if you don’t want to wake up the morning after with regrets.

1. Refrain from piling your plate to the sky or rushing over to the bar.

In addition to your drinking and eating styles, the way someone makes conversation demonstrates their "etiquette intelligence." Simply put, running over to the bar as soon as you arrive, doesn't do you any favors. Remember to take sips and small bites between good conversations with your coworkers.

It's also recommended to eat something before the party and use ice to slow down your intake of alcohol.

2. Keep the flirting at bay

Is office romance ever a good idea? The expert in this article reminds you to stay away from any flirting at an office Christmas party. She also says,

"Don’t overimpose yourself and make risqué remarks or innuendos to attract attention. This style of behavior is quite distasteful. Also look out for co-workers who may be drinking too much. It may be helpful to get them home or away from the party to keep their dignity intact."

3. Mingle! Try not to be exclusive

Seriously, you probably talk to the same group of people every day at work, so why not make a real effort to mingle with other coworkers or departments? Tips for striking up a conversation - find something you have in common and use open ended questions to keep the conversation moving.

A good, positive conversation also keeps the focus on the other person, not yourself.

4. The 'Social Kiss' and how to master it

Alright, so when you greet a coworker, it's sometimes a little nerve wrecking. Do you shake hands? Kiss on the cheek? High five? Watch and take the lead from the person you are greeting. If they lean in for a peck on the cheek, go for it! If they extend their hand, don't lean in and kiss them. That's just awkward.

5. Dress to impress

When in doubt, dress up! It's certainly better than being the only one under dressed at the party. Plus, looking spiffy leaves a lasting impression on your coworkers or big bosses!
