The unofficial start to summer is finally here. As the weather and the water start to heat up it may be a good idea to be aware of the dangers of rip currents.

My son Josh is a lifeguard and he is always pointing out rip currents in the water to me. He's already had to assit a couple of swimmers who got caught in a rip current this past weekend.

A rip currentt can be very dangerous if you're not carful. Rip currents can occur along any coastline that features breaking waves. Here are some saftey tips from noaa.gov on how to beat the grip of a rip.

If you get caught in a rip don't fight the current, swim out of the current and then to shore. Float or tread water if you can't get out of a rip and call or wave for help.

Have a safe summer!
