The daughter of a Belleplain, Cape May County woman has been charged in her mother's death through an overdose of sedatives and painkillers.

Josephine Scheid of Sarasota, Fl. is charged with murder and other crimes in the death of Gabrielle Michaelis, 58, of Belleplain, according to the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office.

When Michaelis died on Oct 31, 2018, State Police labeled the death suspicious and began an investigation.

The state medical examiner’s office ruled her death a homicide this September and concluded it was caused by “intoxication due to hydromorphine, alprazolam and lorazepam.”

The first drug is a narcotic painkiller, while the other two are sedatives.

Scheid was arrested without incident Friday at her home in Sarasota, prosecutors said.

In addition to first-degree murder, she is charged with computer criminal activity, abandonment/neglect of an elderly person, endangering an injured victim, criminal restraint, misapplication of entrusted property, perjury, tampering with evidence and obstructing the administration of law.

She was taken to the Sarasota County Jail pending extradition to New Jersey. She faces 30 years to life on the murder charge.
