How Much Sleep We Really Need at Different Stages of Life
A new study from the National Sleep Foundation has looked into exactly how much sleep a person really needs, according to his or her age group.
A team of 18 medical experts came up with these amounts, and past studies found that a lack of sleep can increase a person's risk of obesity, heart disease and diabetes.
To stay healthy, here are the new amounts of sleep they recommend:
Newborns (0-3 months): 14 to 17 hours a day
Infants (4-11 months): 12 to 15 hours - previously it was 14 to 15
Toddlers (1-2 years): 11 to 14 hours
Preschoolers (3-5): 10 to 13 hours
School-age children (6-13): 9 to 11 hours
Teenagers (14-17): 8 to 10 hours
Younger adults (18-25): 7 to 9 hours
Adults (26-64): 7 to 9 hours (same as before)
Older adults (65+): 7 to 8 hours
