We adopted Sheba from the Humane Society of Ocean City back in September, when she was about four months old.  My previous dog Clue died last January and it took me awhile to be able to put aside that heartbreak and commit to another dog.   I knew I would get one eventually, but... it seemed disrespectful somehow to Clue to rush into it.  Losing a dog who has been a member of your family for 14 years is really hard!

One day my wife e-mailed me  pictures of a little white puppy with some black markings.  She didn't attach a note or any explanation, just a couple of pictures.  She had been at the Humane Society on some other business and had seen this puppy by chance and had asked about it.  I wrote back and asked her why she was sending me pictures of a pit bull.

And so it began. We ended up adopting the puppy we called Sheba,  and the questions of her lineage  haven't stopped since. The staff at the Humane Society said it was their educated guess that Sheba wasn't a pit bull at all, but some kind of a lab mix.

I didn't really care what breed of dog she was as long as she was a good dog.  I have always had mixed breed rescue dogs and even if Sheba was a pit mix,  I wouldn't bother me.  But she did make me curious. All those previous dogs had rather obvious heritage.  You could easily tell by looking what mix the dog s were.

Not Sheba. She was a  mystery.  And there was no easy answer to the repeated questions about the dog's breeding.  Even the standard response, "Well, the Humane Society said she's a lab mix",  didn't really work.  You wouldn't believe the amount of  people who think they know more about a dog's breeding than the Humane Society folks.  "Nah, that's not a lab mix , it's a ....

I've heard lots of guesses, but the one that comes up most for Sheba is pit mix.  But is she really?

So, when I  found out that for under a $100 you could run your dog's DNA, I said why not!  You buy a kit with two swabs, which you rub on the dog's gum, just like they do on C.S.I.  You mail it off to a lab and a couple of weeks later, they send you the dog's DNA results.  We're expecting to hear  Sheba anytime now.

That brings me to my contest.  Think you can  guess what mix of breeds Sheba is?   I'll give you until Sunday(3/4) at midnight to look at the picture and give me your best guess about her mixing.  The person who comes the closest wins dinner for two during Atlantic City Restaurant Week.

If more than one person guesses the breeding exactly, I'll hold a drawing between all the correct contestants.  If no one guesses correctly, I'll hold a drawing between everyone who guessed.  Winner announced Monday on the Lite Rock Morning Show.

Please leave your most exact guess below in the comments section along with your name and e-mail address so I can contact you if you win.  Good luck!
