The six year supermarket drought in Atlantic City is almost over.  Representatives of Save-A-Lot, a 1200 store grocery chain headquartered in Missouri, announced Tuesday that they will open a store in the Renaissance Plaza at Atlantic and Kentucky Avenues.

That store is the site of the last two attempts to have a supermarket... inside the Atlantic City limits.  IGA closed their operation there in 2006, two years after Thriftway closed their doors at that location.

Residents and visiting tourists have complained about a lack of a bonafide supermarket in Atlantic city for years. Talks between the city and  the grocery chain have been ongoing since late 2011 and it had been hoped that that a store would open here before the end of the year.  Tuesday's news moved up that timetable.  The store is set to open Thursday May 17th at 9a.m.

The Save-A-Lot website gives an overview of the chain's philosophy...

"Save-A-Lot is one of the nation's leading extreme value, carefully selected assortment grocery chains, operating nearly 1,200 value-oriented stores in all types of neighborhoods — urban, rural and suburban.
