Lite Rock salutes the efforts to save Lower Cape May Meadows, the beach and wetlands area between Cape May and Cape May Point.  In the late 80s, this area was essential to the fresh water ecosystem was in danger of being destroyed by coastal erosion. Thanks to a combination of federal grant money totaling 75 million dollars over the last quarter century and the efforts of local people form around Cape May, this important habitat for migrating birds such as the piping plover is now thriving.  This year, groups including the Army Corps, The Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Nature Conservancy responsible for saving the Cape May Meadows received the country’s most prestigious environmental award, The Coastal America Partnership Award.  Good job to all who helped save one of our great local assets!
