The Galloway Board of Education was scheduled to meet to discuss a policy regarding transgender students.  The proposal has ignited a fierce debate on a Galloway community Facebook page.  The proposal can be viewed here.

Some of the aspects of the policy include what is described as a "student-centered approach," and states,

With respect to gender-segregated classes or athletic activities, including intramural and interscholastic athletics, all students must be allowed to participate in a manner consistent with their gender identity

Another point of contention is the rule that,

The school district shall allow a transgender student to use a restroom or locker room based on the student's gender identity

The initial reaction to this proposal has been emotionally charged.

A parent named Nancy commented,

I understand that this is state mandated and the district must comply. It is troubling that the parents have no say in this and that they are legally kept out of the loop.

Patrick offered, "Your corrupt system needs to correct this error by sticking with the biology. (sic)"

Those more open to these changes included Heather, who said,

Assuming that non-binary or transgender middle schoolers are inherently creepers who want to look at other children in stalls is incredibly insulting.

Another supporter of the change included Amanda, who offered,

Oh no, the horror, A policy that ensures that EVERY student is safe, respected, and treated equally. How dare they...

Several folks on the thread suggested that it might be time to ditch group restrooms altogether and replace them with individual, private bathrooms.

There was no word on the outcome of the Board meeting as of this writing.
