More than one-third of Atlantic City's firefighters and most of the city's Recreation Department workers will lose their jobs under Mayor Don Guardian's plan to layoff nearly 200 city workers.

According to the Press of Atlantic City, the plan submitted by the city to the Civil Service Commission calls for 40 of the 53 workers in the Rec Department to receive layoff notices, along with 85 of the city's 236 firefighters .

Two firehouses would also likely close under the terms of this plan.

The police department is not expected to be effected by layoffs, since its ranks have fallen to acceptable levels through attrition.

Atlantic City Emergency Manager Kevin Lain has previously suggested that the city's workforce be reduced from approximately 1200 to 850 to 900 workers.

Once the layoff plan is made official, employees must be notified at least 45 days before any layoffs could take effect.
