A troubled Atlantic City man is in custody this morning after a late night standoff with police in the Chelsea Heights section of Atlantic City.

According to the Press of Atlantic City, Christopher Gerace, 35, barricaded himself in his parents home about 11pm Tuesday and apparently fired several shots out a window.

The city's Shot-Spotter system audio gunshot detection sent an alert and several residents reported hearing gunshots.

A veteran of the Army and Marines, he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, his mother told The Press of Atlantic City.

"This is a nightmare. A nightmare," Donna Gerace said in a phone call from Florida, where she and her husband have been staying.

Gerace said her son called on her cell phone Tuesday night, saying he wanted to kill himself. He has a collection of guns from his 15 years in the military, she said.

Police and SWAT units surrounded the house on the 400 block of Elberon Avenue and negotiated with the man for over an hour.  About 1am, Gerace ran into the back yard naked, and after a brief struggle with SWAT officers, he was taken into custody.

As of 3am, police were still waiting for a search warrant for the home.
