Every Thursday morning at 7:15am on the Lite Rock Morning Show, the Humane Society of Ocean City brings in the new Lite Rock Pet of the Week.

If you are thinking about adding a pet to your family, please consider adopting from the Humane Society of Ocean City, a no-kill shelter recognized as one of the nation’s top ten animal shelters.

All of the animals are spayed/neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped before adoption. All animals also receive an Alumni Card which entitles them to a 10% lifetime discount for veterinary services at the Humane Society of Ocean City clinic.
This week we met Gemma the cat

Here is some information on Gemma from the Humane Society of Ocean City:

“Gemma is an adorable, petite but stocky brown and black tabby with white feet and chest and has beautiful green eyes. She is about 4 years old.

Gemma came to the HSOC about 3 summers ago. She was 1 of a litter of 5 kittens and was approximately 12 weeks old. They were born outside and were completely unsocialized with humans. They needed to be domesticated. Shelter staff and volunteers worked with them daily preparing them for adoption.

Three of the 5 domesticated quickly and were adopted. Gemma and her brother, Jax were reluctant to trust humans. Jax was more comfortable with other cats rather than people so he eventually became an addition to the shelters permanent residents. Now, he is one of the first cats to greet visitors in the shelters cat room.

Gemma was different. She was very intimidated by the other cats and didn't do well in the cat room. Gemma is shy but sweet. It would take some patience but she would make a loyal and loving companion to the right person.

She is food motivated and is easily enticed with treats and wet food. This will help with the bonding process. A quiet, low activity household without children would be best. A single person or a couple would be ideal. Gemma would do fine with other calm cats and/or a calm, feline friendly dog.

Cats like Gemma require lots of TLC and patience. What you get out of it is well worth the time and effort. They are usually extremely grateful and show it to their owners every day. Consider adopting Gemma.
