The first rabies case of the new year has been confirmed in Egg Harbor Township.

The Press of Atlantic City reports that a raccoon was found to have the rabies virus on the  February 3rd. The raccoon was found by a homeowner in her backyard. She noticed her dog sniffing and pawing with the raccoon..

 

There were eight confirmed cases of the virus in Atlantic County in 2015. Rabies were found present in assorted animals including, bats, skunks, raccoon and a fox.

According to the Atlantic County Division of Public Health, residents should tell their children not to go near wild, stray or aggressive animals. You can call the Atlantic County Division of Public Health at 609-645-5971 for bites and more information.

The Atlantic County Animal Shelter at 240 Old Turnpike Road in Pleasantville will hold their next free rabies vaccination clinics for dogs and cats on Feb.21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
