Additional Information

About a year after the death of Sister Mary Anne McDonagh, Holy Redeemer is renaming its Jersey Shore Food Pantry in honor of this big-hearted nurse, while also encouraging the community to bring canned goods to the dedication ceremony from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24, at 1801 Route 9 South in Swainton, N.J.

A driving force in establishing the pantry in South Jersey in 1989, Sister Mary Anne worked across the world to help others through her tenure with the Sisters of the Holy Redeemer. A licensed practical nurse, Sister Mary Anne frequently visited and ministered to homebound sick patients in the Greater Philadelphia region in addition to serving as a mentor and formation director to the young sisters. She passed away in February 2012. “The greatest gift I give to the community now is the gift of my presence, trying to be available to listen to those who need a listening ear,” Sister Mary Anne once said.  In continuing Sister Mary Anne’s mission, the community is encouraged to donate canned goods for more than 18,900 sick, elderly, and impoverished individuals in the counties surrounding Swainton. With this non-profit food distribution center helping more than 8,000 people than last year, the need for food is continuing to grow in South Jersey.

The Goal: To help meet the growing demand for food by bringing an impressive amount of food to feed families in South Jersey who are in need.

Donation Location: For those who can’t attend the April 24 dedication ceremony, food donations can be dropped off at the Jersey Shore Food Pantry located at 1801 Route 9 South in Swainton. The pantry’s hours are Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon. For information, please call 609-463-6062.

Food Needed:  Non-perishable food products such as canned beans, canned beef stew, canned soup, coffee, cookies, crackers, canned fruit, canned fruit juice, instant milk, instant potatoes, Jell-O mix, pudding mix, jelly, laundry detergent, macaroni and cheese, paper towels, pasta, peanut butter, canned potatoes, canned ravioli, rice, spaghetti sauce, tea bags, canned tomato sauce, canned tuna, canned vegetables, cereal, and oatmeal.

Holy Redeemer’s Jersey Shore Food Pantry has been serving the local community since 1989 when the Sisters of the Holy Redeemer organized the pantry as an extension of Holy Redeemer’s home care services.
