Dusty Is a 'Wadi Dog' Rescued From Oman

Every Thursday morning at 7:15am on the Lite Rock Morning Show, the Humane Society of Ocean City brings in the new Lite Rock Pet of the Week.

This week we met “Dusty” the dog. Dusty is a year-old "Omani Wadi dog", rescued from the streets of Oman.

Here is some information on Dusty from the Humane Society of Ocean City:

"Dusty is a male "Omani Wadi dog" who is about 10 months old. He traveled
all the way from the Arabian Peninsula in search of his forever home.

These wadi dogs can be seen virtually everywhere in Oman. Unfortunately, they face the same plight as many Muslim countries where dogs are generally viewed as unclean and not fit to be pets. Dog ownership is rare and when they are owned they are usually not allowed in the house and are more often viewed as guard dogs left to roam the outside vicinity of the home. The government doesn’t have humane animal welfare laws and worse yet police are given open rights to shoot “any and all” wadi dogs. They don’t have to be a nuisance – they will be killed just for having the unfortunate luck of being born on the streets in Oman.

Having been found by canine rescuers who work in Oman, Dusty wandered out of the
desert when he was about 6-8 weeks old. Apparently separated from his
doggie-family, Dusty spent the next 8 months being fostered by the rescue
worker who found him. Dusty's journey led him to the HSOC on December 24th,
2016.not quite on Santa's sleigh, but a Christmas gift just the same! He
spent the next couple weeks adjusting to life here, state-side in the
shelter.

Dusty is an intelligent and wonderfully happy pooch, possessing a silly
playfulness about him. He tends to be a bit shy and timid at first, but
responds well to affection and food!! He is still a bit sensitive to new
things (people, sounds, bicycles, trash truck, etc.) and will need proper
socialization training. Outgoing and well-mannered, Dusty is attentive and
gentle, has good energy though is not rambunctious. He is an undemanding
pooch, rather submissive about most things. Dusty is house-broken, and knows
a few basic obedience cues fairly well.

Dusty does have resource guarding issues, about food and high-value goodies,
hence he is not suitable to live with children, adults only. He may okay
with other pets, though other dogs will require a meet n greet (by appt.
only). Experienced dog owners are a must for Dusty, but if you think you may
be the right forever home for him, come down to the HSOC and meet him today!"

If you would like to visit Dusty or need more information about any animal up for adoption at The Humane Society of Ocean City, call 609-398-9500 or stop in any day between 11a-3p.To adopt from the HSOC you will need one form of identification, which includes your name, permanent address and proof of ownership (i.e., local tax stub).

If you rent, written approval from your landlord is required as well as personal identification.The adoption fee is $50.00 for cats or kittens and $85 for dogs, adults and puppies.

They accept cash, Visa, MasterCard, Discover and debit cards. Checks are accepted upon management’s approval. All adoptions include spay/neuter surgery, microchip if requested, free first vet exam, and all necessary vaccinations through the first year. Adoption applications are available at the shelter.
