Planning on taking to the beach to soak up the last few days of summer?

You might want to think twice about taking a late summer since it could be life threatening to anyone entering the surf. According to the National Weather Service, east-northeast winds of 20 mph will create “dangerous and hazardous conditions."  Most beaches will also be with out lifeguards.

Here are some tips from the National Weather Service on how to get out of a rip current.  NWS has some advice to follow:

  • Don’t fight the current.
  • Relax and float to conserve energy. Staying calm may save your life.
  • Do NOT try to swim directly into to shore.
  • Swim parallel to the shoreline until you escape the current’s pull.
  • Swim at an angle away from the current toward shore once you're out of the rip.
  • Wave and yell for help, swim parallel to the shore
