NJ Is Home to America’s Oldest Active Teacher
Agnes Zhelesnik celebrated her 102nd birthday on Tuesday and is thought to be America's oldest active school teacher. An added plus, she teaches in New Jersey!
Agnes was born on Jan. 12, 1914, in Thomas, West Virginia. She and her four siblings were born to Lithuanian immigrants.
To put things in perspective, when she was a student they didn't even have indoor bathrooms!
Agnes has been teaching sewing and cooking at The Sundance School in North Plainfield since the age of 80. Her students call her "Granny."
How does Agnes still manage to teach full-time? She says by getting to bed every night at 8:30 and her love of caring for children. She said in an interview the key to happy life is to "just be happy with what you're doing!"
Congratulations Agnes, and thank you!
