11 Year-Old Brought Knife, ‘Kill List’ to EHT School

A third incident of a child bringing a knife to a South Jersey elementary school has been reported.

An 11-year-old boy brought a steak knife and a “kill list” of students he planned to harm to the Dr. Joyanne D. Miller School in Egg Harbor Township on Wed. Feb 8.

The Egg Harbor Township Current reports that fourth and fifth graders from the school came home last week and told their parents about the incident.

The Current interviewed Interim Superintendent Fred Nickles who said school officials and EHT Police are continuing to investigate the report.

“When the school found out about it, the children were interviewed about it. The knife was found in the student’s backpack, and the student was suspended,” he said.

“The Egg Harbor Township Police Department was notified immediately and did an incident report. We are currently having the student evaluated by our child study team, and all the parents of the students involved have been notified.”

Nichols confirmed that the boy told other classmates that he had a steak knife and a list of students he planned to take action against.

Last week we told you about knife incidents at elementary schools in Somers Point and Hamilton Township. In the Hamilton Township indecent, a first grader on a school bus was injured by a knife brought onboard by a fellow student.

Egg Harbor Township school principals have spoken to students about violence and bullying, according to Nichols. He defended the school’s decision not to send a message about this latest knife indecent home to all the school’s parents.

“I don’t think that it is our responsibility to inform the entire population of that school on what occurred. All of the parents of the students involved were notified, and I have not received any complaints regarding any notification of non-involved parents,” he said. “I don’t know if that is a legitimate criticism. We have confidentialities that we have an obligation to maintain.”
