Why Vineland’s Community Pools May Not Open This Summer

The City of Vineland's two community pools are in jeopardy of not opening for swimmers this summer, and it has nothing to do with COVID-19.

The problem is a lack of lifeguards.  Dale Elbeuf, the city’s recreation superintendent put it simply when speaking with the Vineland Daily Journal. “You can’t open pools without lifeguards.”

Vineland has been running ads for qualified lifeguards for several month with no success, even with a competitive seasonal salary rate of $12 an hour.

The pools - one outdoors at the Carl V. Arthur Recreation Building on Plum Street and the other an indoor pool at the Sabater Elementary School, are usually up and running by the Fourth of July, but not this year.

The jobs require lifeguard, first aid, and CPR certifications and are listed on the city of Vineland website.
