You’re sitting with friends and dipping your chips into some salsa while enjoying a nice cold margarita and the next thing you know you break into a full sweat. We know the heat of the summer and exercise can cause us to sweat but what we eat or drink can have a big impact on how much we perspire.

Why? The most common reason is that certain foods or drinks have a thermogenic effect on our bodies.  As we digest they cause heat to be released into our body and the longer it takes the more our temperature rises.

What are some foods that make us sweat? Salty, spicy, fatty, or processed foods can get those sweat glands going, also, Alcoholic beverages, foods high in sugar and carbs, and believe it or not caffeinated drinks.

Consuming products that contain caffeine every day, especially multiple times a day, will definitely have an impact on how much you sweat. This is because caffeine works by getting your body to release adrenaline. Doing this stimulates the body’s nervous system and raises your body’s temperature. While this doesn’t mean that you will break out sweating after only one cup of coffee, it does mean that you should keep an eye on how much caffeine you are taking in, especially if you are having problems controlling how much you sweat.

Even if you are not a coffee or energy drink consumer, there are plenty of heavy foods that can cause you to sweat more. Your digestive system can break most foods down within a day or even within hours, but many processed or fried foods can take several days. Since this is causing your body to work harder, it will also raise your core temperature, leaving you all sweaty. If you are trying to limit how much you sweat, take a hard look at what you are eating.
