Authorities say two people were shot and killed and one person was wounded in Salem overnight.

According to a post on his Facebook page early Thursday morning, as reported by NJ.com, Salem Police Chief John Pelura III said two men were killed at a home on Thompson Street. Pelura III said authorities have identified a suspect but no further information was given.

This latest round of violence comes just days after two men were shot in less than one hour at separate incidents in nearby Penns Grove. Last Saturday night, 23-year-old Bryant Banks of Salem was shot to death and two other people, a 21-year-old man from Quinton Township and a 42-year-old man from Carneys Point Township, were wounded. Minutes later, 27-year-old Shamar Turner of Salem was shot and killed.

Less than a month ago, two people, both in their 20s, were shot on Route 49 in Quinton Township as they were turning into a restaurant. Back in July, two men were shot and killed in Salem.

Back in May, a task force was created to address the situation. Speaking to NJ.com back then, Salem County Prosecutor John T. Lenahan said, "Typically, we have five or less homicides in the entire county."

NJ.com reports the City of Salem has recorded 10 homicides for the year with nine of those victims having been shot.
