The holiday weekend wasn't without some excitement for officers in the City of Wildwood Police Department. Police report on Facebook that about 9:15 pm Sunday, May 24, a patrol car spotted a car driving at a high rate of speed with no lights driving north on Atlantic Avenue.

Police attempted to stop the car, but the driver fled into North Wildwood.

Minutes later, the officers came upon the sedan after it had crashed into a metal light pole near 25th and Surf Avenues in North Wildwood.

The two occupants of the vehicle fled the scene on foot, but were apprehended after a brief foot pursuit with the assistance of the Wildwood Police Department K9 Unit.

The driver, Roy J. Mendez, 20, of Deepwater, was charged with eluding police, obstruction, possession of marijuana, possession of prescription drugs, underage consumption of alcohol, DWI and additional motor vehicle violations.

The passenger, Dalton M. DiMatteo, 18, of Pennsville was charged with obstruction, possession of marijuana, and possession of prescription drugs.

Both occupants of the car were released with a summons complaint.
