Visitors to a small lake in New Jersey got a surprise this week when they spotted a shark swimming in the water.

The thresher shark was circling Stockton Lake in Manasquan and was actually captured.

Video below taken by Michael Collins and posted to Facebook shows the shark swimming in the rain.

A resident who lives near the lake told Patch.com that a young man managed to hook it and bring it to shore. He reportedly drove away with it in his truck.

News of the incident reportedly reached Bob Schoelkopf, the executive director of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine. Unfortunately, Schoelkopf said he was told the shark died. He told Patch.com that a thresher shark can rupture if picked up by hand because it has no internal structure.

The Stranding Center recommends contacted them for help if you run into a similar situation at (609) 266-0538.

As for how the shark ended up in Stockton Lake to begin with, Schoelkopf surmises it could have swam into Manasquan Inlet, then onto a creek that connects to the lake.
