It's gone now, but back in the day a theater in Camden County used to show the cult classic 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' every single weekend.

If you know, you know. Seeing 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' at the old Harwan Theatre, on the corner of Black Horse Pike and Kings Highway, in Mount Ephraim was a very South Jersey thing.

The theater showed the film every Friday night for YEARS, at least through the early 90's, maybe longer.

And it was an interactive experience. Theatre employees would dress up in costume and pretty much perform 'Rocky Horror' as the movie played. And moviegoers got in on the action, too. Harwan WAS a movie THEATRE. You can tell from its formal spelling, with the 're' at the end, instead of 'er', lol.

I used to spend a lot of time in the projector room of the Harwan in the early 1990's when I was a teenager in high school. A few of my friends were in a dance troop called 'Wiz Kidz' (sp), and Harwan Theatre allowed them to use the stage on Saturday mornings as a rehearsal space. I would stay in the projector room and run their music for them and video their performances.

I'd be up there in the rafters among all the 'Rocky Horror' costumes and it was amazing.

Harwan Theatre was an iconic building in South Jersey until it was torn down in 2007 to make way for a Walgreens. Opened in 1930 as Mount Ephraim Theatre, it was popular for its vaudeville, according to Wikipedia.org. In the late 1960's the theater was sold and became the Harwan.
