Ocean City Police issued a fraud alert on Monday to warn of an ongoing phone scam which has been attempted several times recently at South Jersey businesses.

According to police, the scammers call the business and identify themselves as representatives with the electric company attempting to collect past due bills.

The caller, usually a woman, gives a return number for the business owner to call.  When the call is returned, business owners are told they have one hour to make the payment via Pay Pal or with a pre-paid money card or their power will be cut off.

Variations of this scam are being reported nationwide and have been a problem in South Jersey since earlier this year.

One local business is known to have fallen for the scam.

Ocean City Police suggest disregarding any call of this type and contacting them immediately to report the indecent at 609-399-9111.
