A rash of phony phone calls has prompted a warning from South Jersey Gas. Customers are being asked to purchase and provide prepaid money card information over the phone to avoid having their natural gas service disrupted.

In some cases you're being asked to purchase purchase a Green Dot money card at a local retailer with cash. The scammer will then provide a  a phone number 856-204-8991 for you to  to call back with the card number and a expiration date.

Here's what you need to know to avoid being scammed: South Jersey Gas would never ask you for immediate payment over the phone. If you receive this call you should hang up and call your local police to report the scam. You should then call SJG customer service at 888-766-9900.
