Medical marijuana could be grown locally as early as August, as work is well underway at one of two legal dispensaries planned here in the Garden State.

According to the Press of Atlantic City, the 85,000-square-foot facility on Delilah Road in Egg Harbor Township will house 16,000 plants once it's open. Officials say it could also be expanded if needed.

The plants will be processed on site and made into a wide array of products, from lozenges to lotions. Medical marijuana got state approval two years ago, and will be dispensed only to patients who are pre-approved by the state Department of Health.

Meanwhile, the Egg Harbor Township dispensary is set open in December after a three-month cultivation period.

A second dispensary, to be operated by Greenleaf Compassion Center, is planned for Montclair, Essex County.
