Almost 75% of all Americans travel over the holiday season, if you are one of them, you know it can take a toll on your health.  Whether you're traveling on the road or getting on a plane for a longer trip, preparing in advance can help you avoid some of the toughest travel pitfalls.   

For a long road trip or travel by plane,  pack some healthy meals along with extra snacks.    If you are flying, did you ever sit next to that guy who coughs for two hours straight?  Dr. Mehmet Oz of the Dr. Oz Show calls airplanes incubators for illness.   Dr. Oz  advises us to  “Pack an alcohol-based hand sanitizer and use it early and often...which can reduce you chance of getting sick by 50 percent.”   And find ways to keep moving - take a break  on a long car ride, get out and move around and get up from your seat on a plane or train.     Just Keep Moving

    Traveling makes us more sedentary. Find as many chances as you can to move your body. Take walks, find a gym or do some home exercises, such as push-ups or sit-ups.

    Don't Forget Your Meds

    Pack prescription meds in your carry-on, not check bag. It is cold and flu season, so pack some cold medicine just in case you start to feel something coming on.  If you get queasy while traveling, some antacids or ginger can do the trick.

    Pack Healthy Snacks

    It is not always to eat fresh, healthy foods while traveling. Plan in advance and pack some fresh meals and snacks.

    Stay Hydrated

    Bring plenty of water, not sugary or caffeinated beverages. Staying hydrated keeps your body functioning better and helps curb your appetite.

    Chill Out

    Travelling can be stressful.  If you get stuck in traffic or your flight is delayed, take some deep breaths and realize it is out of your control so try to make the most of this down time.  Also, schedule in some time to relax at your destination or when you get home.  We all need that decompression time.
