An Egg Harbor Township native has been honored by the US Navy.

The Navy reports that Naval Aircrewman (Helicopter) 1st Class Charles Hardmon has been awarded the USS Constitution’s Jans Valdespou Leadership award.

Hardmon is a 2004 graduate of Egg Harbor Township High School. He's been in the US Navy for 8 years.

The Navy says the award "is presented to a Sailor who exemplifies outstanding leadership and superior performance by going above and beyond their assigned job."

Hardmon has been serving aboard the USS Constitution - the oldest commissioned warship afloat. It's been riding the seas since the late 1700s!

Here's what Hardmon had to say about winning the award: “It’s an honor to serve on board Old Ironsides and there is nothing more honorable than to be respected and loved by those you lead."

The active-duty Sailors stationed aboard USS Constitution normally provide free tours and offer public visitation to more than 600,000 people each year as they support the ship’s mission of promoting the Navy’s history, maritime heritage, and raising awareness of the importance of a sustained naval presence.

USS Constitution was undefeated in battle and captured or destroyed 33 enemy vessels.

The ship earned the nickname of Old Ironsides during the war of 1812 after British cannonballs were seen bouncing off the ship’s wooden hull.

Congratulations, Charles Hardmon! Thanks for your service and we're glad to hear your doing well!
