The unfortunate truth of our current reality is that we all likely know someone who has been affected by the opioid epidemic in one way or another. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 10.1 million people have misused prescription opioids in the past year, resulting in 70,630 deaths from overdoses.

Those numbers are pretty shocking, to say the least, and it made me wonder what action we as a community can take to address the opioid epidemic here in our own town, and that's when I learned about Shore Medical Center's new quarterly health education series "Wellness Together."

It's a panel discussion where local residents can hear from experts in healthcare, law enforcement, and mental health and addiction agencies and learn how they all work in unison to prevent opioid addiction and help those who are struggling with opioid use disorder.

People will also have an opportunity to tour the mobile outreach vehicle Hope One Atlantic County, an initiative by the Atlantic County Sheriff's Department to tackle opioid addiction, and visit information tables before and after the panel discussion.

As tough as the subject matter may be, I think you should consider attending Shore Medical Center's first "Wellness Together" event because I think we all have a duty to educate ourselves about this extremely important issue impacting our own backyard.

If you're interested in going to the event, be sure to mark your calendars for Wednesday, July 14 and show up to Greate Bay Country Club, 910 Somers Point - Mays Landing Road when the doors open at 6:30 p.m. You can learn more about Shore Medical Center and their "Wellness Together" series by visiting them online at www.shoremedicalcenter.org.
