Work is underway clearing trees from a patch of land along Ocean Heights Avenue in Egg Harbor Township to make way for the new home of Dollar General.

This location will be the fourth Dollar General store in Egg Harbor Township and the 14th in Atlantic County.  A 15th Dollar General location is soon to open in Brigantine. That's a lot of Dollar General stores in relatively small area.

There's a heated discussion on an Egg Harbor Township Facebook group page about whether there are too many Dollar General stores in EHT.

Comments about the new EHT store cover the spectrum, ranging from support to disgust about the store's opening.

Shame on the township for approving it when it’s not needed and killing nature for their junk.

Dollar general is a good store for people who are not looking to spend lots of money on things. I enjoy shopping there. I agree there’s a lot of them. But at least we don’t have to travel far to go to one

Just what we DONT need!!!

Township is responsible for this atrocity .

In fairness to Dollar General, they wouldn't be opening more locations if their research didn't show that the market would support them.  And Dollar General still has a long way to go to match the number of Wawas in the county. By my count, there are 21 Wawas in Atlantic County.

It seems to me that the proliferation of generic discount stores says something sad about our society today. What I would personally prefer to see are locally owned mom and pop stores. But those stores can't compete with the buying power of a national discounter.

By the way, CNBC reports that Dollar General plans to add more than 1000 new stores nationally this year, so this Dollar Generalization of America appears to be happening everywhere.

What do you think? Do we need another Dollar General store in Atlantic County?
