In a world where events are on one day and off the next, the City of Wildwood will now not be having fireworks on the 4th of July.

The Greater Wildwoods Tourism Improvement and Development Authority and the City of Wildwood say the move is in the interest of public safety.

Wildwood Mayor Pete Byron and city commissioners made the move in an effort to discourage large gatherings on what is traditionally the busiest holiday weekend of the year.

In a press release, Byron said, "Wildwood is ready, willing and able to produce a spectacular fireworks show. However, as we’ve seen with the delay of opening indoor dining this week, the public is not adequately following Covid-19 public safety rules such as social distancing. We can’t take a chance that Wildwood sees a spike in cases and shuts down our businesses who have already suffered immensely due to closures."

Commissioner of Public Safety Steve Mikulski went on to say that even as they moved the display to the most wide-open part of the city, proper social distancing would not be possible.

Wildwood was one of a small number of towns offering fireworks on the 4th of July and was promoting the event on their Facebook page as recently as last Friday.
