Give it up for Cape May County! We are #1 in the state of New Jersey out of 21 counties.  Who said South Jersey just couldn't compete?  In your face, we're number one, my second-place friend! What is our distinction, you ask?

Well, according to the data from the U.S. Census, Cape May County leads the state of New Jersey in the...highest death rate. Ouch.

Each year, 13.7% of Cape May County die. State-wide, 8.2% of people die.

Salem and Ocean have the second-and third-highest, at 12.2 and 11.8 percent, respectively.

According to NJ.com, two more South Jersey counties are in next in the death race. Salem and Ocean have the second- and third-highest, at 12.2 and 11.8 percent, respectively.

Experts NJ.com checked with attribute the larger death rate in Cape May County to the following...

1- the number of older people living in Cape May County

2- A larger number of people in poor health or dealing with stressful situations.

3-  More poor people
