Simpson, a co-owner of Bootleggers liquors in Northfield and a first-term mayor, was suffering from end-stage renal disease. Last winter, his children rented a billboard to ask for available kidney donors.

A neighbor and family friend volunteered and was found to be a suitable donor, but the surgery, scheduled for March, was postponed by COVID restrictions.

Mayor Simpson is survived by his three children. His wife, Linda, died in January after a battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
