After a legal fight that has lasted for years, New Jersey has finally won the battle to legalize sports betting dropping a federal ban that has been in place for over 25 years. The previous law made sports betting illegal outside of Nevada, Delaware, Montana, and Oregon, but this morning the Supreme Court ruled 7-2 to overturn the ban.

Justice Samuel Alito, a New Jersey native said, ""The legalization of sports gambling requires an important policy choice, but the choice is not ours to make. Congress can regulate sports gambling directly, but if it elects not to do so, each State is free to act on its own."

New Jersey has attempted to overturn the ban since 2011 in hopes to help Atlantic City casinos. New Jersey voters voted in favor of sports betting via an amendment to the state's Constitution. Former Governor Chris Christie signed it into law in 2012, which was overturned by federal district and appeals courts. A second attempt in 2014 was also blocked.

The NCAA, NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB have strongly opposed New Jersey's efforts.
