In the case of a parent's worst nightmare becoming reality, an 11-year-old riding a bicycle in Brigantine on Wednesday was hit by a vehicle and seriously injured.

Brigantine Police say the crash happened at about 1:38 pm Wednesday, Aug. 25, on West Beach Avenue near 8th Street South. The child, who police are not identifying as a boy or girl, was apparently one of several juveniles riding bikes when they failed to stop before crossing West Beach Avenue and rode into the path of the striking vehicle.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, Brigantine Police said they and Brigantine Fire Department personnel were called to the crash scene where they immediately began to give medical care to the injured child.

The juvenile was transported to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center and then later transferred to Cooper Medical Center. As of Thursday afternoon, the child was listed in stable condition with what the police are calling serious injuries.

It is not known if the injured cyclist was wearing a helmet. Luckily, there were apparently no other injuries to any of the other kids who rode out into an intersection.

Brigantine Police are asking for any witnesses to Wednesday's crash to come forward and speak with them.

At this time, the investigation has determined that multiple juveniles failed to stop their bicycles before crossing West Beach Avenue into the path of the striking vehicle. The investigation remains active and is being led by Officers Ludy and Dugan. Anyone with additional information on this incident or who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact Brigantine Police at 609-266-7414.
