When Stockton University holds its commencement on May 15, Nikita Cross was set to become the first member of her family to graduate from college.

Nikita, who was shot and killed Saturday night while attending a birthday party, won't make it to the Stockton commencement. But she will be awarded her degree posthumously.

Cross, 35, the mother of two young children and a cocktail waitress at Caesars Atlantic City, who had been juggling work, family and her studies while anticipation graduating, was shot in the chest at a family member’s birthday party in Burlington County.

Darren Winningham, 42, is charged with murder and weapons offenses in her death.

“We will be conferring a posthumous degree, a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work, at our undergraduate commencement ceremony on May 15,” said Mary Beth Sherrier, assistant dean of Stockton’s School of Social and Behavioral Science", as reported by the Press of Atlantic City.

“Nikita was always a joy to have in class, always passionate about helping others, always inspiring her peers to do even more to make a difference,” said Sherrier."
