Saturday's kick-off to the new football season for the Somers Point Sharks will have special purpose this year,  as players, parents and friends turn their Family Fun Day in to a fundraiser for a former player now battling cancer.

Sean Carey, 14, an incoming freshman at Mainland Regional High School, grew up playing with the Sharks and was the varsity squad kicker, was diagnosed with hip cancer earlier this year.

The type of cancer is treatable, but Sean faces a long road to recovery.

The Sharks will donate money raised from a field goal kicking tournament, "Field Goals for Sean", during this Saturday's Family Fun Day to help defray expenses related to Sean's cancer treatment.

Sean's mom, Jen Carey, a teacher at Margate's Tighe School, said any money left over from Saturday's event would be paid forward to help other children fighting cancer.

The Somers Point Family Fun Day is Saturday, Aug. 15 from 9a-5p. at the Pit, Lawrence "Bud" Kern Field, 598 Marks Rd, Somers Point. See more details
