Another winter storm system is setting its sights on New Jersey beginning Sunday night and a mix of snow, sleet, and rain could make for a challenging ride to work or school Monday morning.

As promised, our active, wintry pattern continues with yet another storm system. We'll call this a "feast or famine forecast" as New Jersey is likely to see some places with significant snow, and some spots with hardly any snow at all. The big challenge to this forecast is the fact that the freezing line - the difference between the rain and snow - is expected to sit right over New Jersey for the duration. That means the central part of the state will be subject to swinging back and forth between rain, sleet, snow, and/or a mix of all of the above.

Here's our latest forecast...

Based on the latest information, confidence is rising that far North Jersey will be stuck in solid snow for most of this storm, while far South Jersey will see mostly rain. As the forecast graphic above shows, there will be a sharp gradient through the middle of the state, where snow and ice may be suppressed for a time by rain or wintry mix, but some accumulations are still expected.

The timing of this storm is unfortunate, as many New Jerseyans will be hitting the road for Super Bowl XLIX parties, which will be starting just as the precipitation is starting. Luckily, the first few bands are expected to be rather light... but the potential for slippery roads makes caution on the roads all the more important. The heavy stuff picks up overnight Sunday into Monday, which means roads will likely be pretty ugly when the morning commute rolls around. Once again, the most "wintry" impacts will be felt the further north you go, while the most "wet" impacts will be to the south.

As of this writing, the National Weather Service has issued Winter Storm Warnings (pink) and a Winter Storm Watch (blue) for the northern part of the state. The map below will update with the latest advisories as they are issued and/or canceled:

We'll continue to monitor the latest forecast, as always, and will update regularly between now and storm time. Be prepared for potential delays and closings on Monday morning, and if you have to travel make plans to leave early.
