Legislation is now being introduced in Trenton that would effectively lower the drinking age from 21 to 18. I will be following this story very closely since I'm the parent of a 19-year-old college student.

NJ.com reports that Assemblyman Michael Patrick Carroll (R-Morris) has introduced a bill to lower the drinking age from 21 to 18. Congress passed a law to raise the legal drinking age in the state from 19 to 21 back in 1984, and President Ronald Reagan then signed the bill to make it a law.

According to NJ.gov, in 1980, when the legal drinking age in New Jersey was 19, fatalities were at an all-time high for 18 to 20 year olds.

The bill being introduced to lower the drinking age to 18 is concerning to me since my son will be 20 this summer. I know he's a responsible, good kid, but I'm also not naive to the fact that there is partying going on in college. I've had many discussions with him on the dangers of drinking and driving and how his decision could affect not only himself, but others.

I'm not sure that certain 18-year-olds can handle the responsibility of being allowed to legally purchase alcohol.
