Researchers examined 4,200 studies and 11 different diet plans to see which are the most effective.

The two plans with evidence of long term success over the years were Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig.

Nutrisystem was able to achieve short term success with plenty of weigh lost in the first three months, but this was more difficult to keep off over time.

Similarly, those eating low calorie meal replacers kept weight off for 4-6 months but were unable to do so long term.

The Atkins diet was also very successful at keeping off weight for 6-12 months.

The diets that were studied that didn't seem to work were: Slim-Fast, Biggest Loser Club, eDiets and Lose it!

Most programs haven't received any study at all regarding their effectiveness, or have only been reviewed for short-term success, lead author Dr. Kimberly Gudzune told Newsmax.com. She is an assistant professor of medicine and a weight-loss specialist at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.
