Report: Baseball Could be Making Return to Atlantic City

Minor league baseball could be making a return to Atlantic City.

According to the Press of Atlantic City, city council will meet tonight to vote to allow former Surf owner Frank Boulton a 90-day window to find a owner for the team.

Boulton started the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball in 1998 where the original Atlantic City started out in their first season.

The team last played in the city in 2008, before ceasing operations on March 30, 2009.

The stadium is still standing on Albany avenue, but is not quite ready to host a full-time baseball team.  The stadium fell into a state of disrepair, but some repairs have been made to the kitchen areas, bathrooms and playing surface.   However, plenty more needs to be worked on, most notably a new scoreboard, lights, and the entire underbelly still needs to be re-done.

Boulton told David Danzis of the Press of AC:

“There’s work to be done, there’s no question about it,” Boulton said. “But that won’t be done in the next 90 days. What will be done in the next 90 days is getting the commitments to do all the work and put all the pieces of the puzzle in place.”

The venue has been used in the recent past for baseball, Atlantic City high school as played some of its games there, some weekend AAU tournaments and the Atlantic Shore Babe Ruth League hosted the Mid-Atlantic Regional tournament there a few occasions.
