Lucy the 134-year old iconic elephant in Margate is in need of repairs costing close to $60,000. Financial help won't be coming from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

The Board of Trustees for Lucy have decided against obtaining funding through PETA. According to the Press of Atlantic City, PETA offered a undisclosed amount of money for to help with repairs with the stipulation that Lucy had to be decorated like Ella the Elephant including having her feet shackled. Ella currently sits outside PETA’s offices located in Washington, D.C. and is associated with the mistreatment and cruelty of elephants in captivity. The donation from PETA would have only amounted to $2,000.

Lucy is also in need of a fresh coat of paint which will cost over 20,000. You can help buy purchasing a “I Helped Paint Lucy” T-shirt for $20 at  lucytheelephant.org.  All proceeds go directly towards Lucy’s makeover.
