Police departments around South Jersey and across the country paid tribute to Officer Martin Peary on Thursday.

Peary, an acting sergeant with the Northfield Police Department, died Thursday morning at AtlanticCare Regional Medical Center in Pomona. He was an 18-year veteran of the Northfield police department.

According to Northfield Mayor Erland Chau, Peary had been in a coma since suffering a massive heart attack at his home last week. Chau told the Press of Atlantic City, "he was one of the good guys".

The city's police department Facebook page paid tribute to Peary, saying The Northfield Police Department and Northfield community lost a great man last night. Rest in peace A/Sgt. Marty Peary #622."

Other police departments across the country offered their condolences and paid tribute to Peary on social media Thursday.
