Amazingly, more than four years have passed since that tragic August day when we learned that four boys from the Mainland Football Team had died in a car accident.

The Mainland Memoriam Act, remembering the lives of four Mainland Regional High School football players who died in that 2011 car accident is now law in New Jersey.

The students - Casey Brenner, Edgar Bozzi, Dean Khoury and Nick Conner- died when the young driver of an SUV carrying eight members of the team lost control of the vehicle, which overturned several times on the Garden State Parkway.

The law was sponsored by state Assemblyman Vince Mazzeo, who was the mayor of Northfield at the time of the accident, is intended to remind beginning drivers that they are permitted to have only one passenger with them in the car.

In a press release, Mazzeo explained his hope for the legislation, “The untimely passing of the Mainland four is a heartbreaking example of just how dangerous driving on the roads can be, particularly for those with less experience.... My hope is that in some small way this legislation will stop any future tragedies from happening.”

The law directs the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission to create graduated driver’s license informational material to be distributed to car dealers. The material must detail the laws and conditions applicable to holders of special learner’s permits, examination permits and probationary driver’s licenses.

Car dealers are required to offer this information to buyers or lessees at the time of purchase or lease of a vehicle.

Under New Jersey graduated driver’s license law, drivers under the age of 18 may not operate a vehicle between 11:01 pm and 5 am or have more than one passenger in the car other than a supervising adult, along with other restrictions.

A violation of any GDL restriction is subject to a $100 fine.
