New Jersey Deals with Snow and Bitter Cold

Snow that gave New Jersey a challenging Friday morning is giving way to frigid temperatures.

Winter storm and coastal flood warnings expired as scheduled for New Jersey.  Temperatures are holding in the teens with gusty winds out of the north and northwest creating a wind chill in the single digits.

Temperatures will fall to the single digits tonight but the winds will continue making for a wind chill of -10.

State and other governmental offices are closed for the day, as are most schools. Details on closings and cancellations are available here on NJ1015.com.

Several inches of dry, fluffy snow fell Thursday night into Friday morning before moving out after sunrise.  Monmouth County had snowfall amounts of 9-10 inches in many communities. Some of the highest snowfalls around the state measured by the National Weather Service include:

10.5 inches in Freehold
10.0 inches in Long Branch and Lakewood
9.5 inches in Marlboro
9 inches in National Park in Gloucester County, Brick, Jackson and Colts Neck
8.8 inches in Mt. Laurel
8.6 inches in West Berlin
8.5 inches in East Brunswick
8.3 inches in Hopewell
8 inches in Mercerville,

There were no major power outages reported on the outage maps of JCP&L, Atlantic City Electric and PSE&G.

Crews were out with an army of plows on major highways as well as many streets of the night into the morning. Joe Dee of the New Jersey Department of Transportation said all major highways should be down to blacktop for the ride home. Speed restrictions remain in place for stretches of the Garden State Parkway, New Jersey Turnpike and Atlantic City Expressway.

New Jersey Fast Traffic reported several jackknifed trucks and vehicle spin-outs around the state this morning but there were no complete road closures.

Gov. Chris Christie (R) declared a State of Emergency for New Jersey Friday. The declaration does not restrict travel but instead “empowers the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management (NJOEM) to act on behalf of the Governor to employ the resources and assets of State, local and private agencies to provide immediate assistance to localities,” according to the NJ Office of Emergency Management.

NJ Transit is operating on an enhanced weekend schedule on Friday and will continue to cross-honor tickets system-wide on trains, light rail and buses. Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor is also operating on a modified snow schedule. PATH, PATCO and SEPTA are all running on normal schedules.

Most flights out of Newark, LaGuardia and Kennedy Airports have all been canceled for today. All airports plus Philadelphia are open.
