ATLANTIC CITY - Streets throughout the city should be brighter at night in the not-too-distant future. City officials, in collaboration with Atlantic City Electric and the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU), plan to replace 8,638 fixtures with more intense, and more efficient, LED lights.

In phase one, Atlantic City will apply state and federal funding to the cost of replacing 5,638 streetlights owned by Atlantic City Electric, according to NJBPU spokesman Peter Peretzman.

The cost of the 3,000 owned by the city, in phase two, will be borne by incentives through New Jersey's Clean Energy Program.

NJBPU offered no insight into why Atlantic City Electric bears no cost responsibility, or whether the efficiency upgrade would mean operating cost savings or downward rate adjustments for customers.

Mayor Don Guardian, NJBPU President Richard Mroz, and Atlantic City Electric Region President Vince Malone offer more details Friday, in front of New York Avenue Elementary School, at 10:30 AM.
