Frank Micelotta/Getty Images[/caption]"American Idol" debuted thirteen years ago today.  It was based on the British series "Pop Idol" and went on to become one of the most successful shows in the history of American TV.  Then last month Fox announced that the series was cancelled and that the program would conclude its run following its fifteenth season.

Undoubtedly the popularity of "American Idol" has declined over the years, due in large part to shows like "The Voice".  However, one thing is for sure.  "American Idol" revived a lot of careers and launched many new ones.  The show brought judge Paula Abdul's career back into the limelight.  And whether you love him or hate him, Simon Cowell became a household name. It also jump-started several musical careers, including those of Carrie Underwood, Phillip Phillips, and Daughtry.  Some of the runners-up (like Daughtry) ended up fairing better than the winners (like Ruben Studdard).

But the big winner (and still my favorite American Idol) was the original American Idol Kelly Clarkson.  "American Idol" may have given her a great start in a tough business, but she never relied on it to make her career.  In fact, she dissed it a few times, and it never seemed to hurt her at all.  In fact, it may have helped establish her as a truly talented artist.  Most of all, she always stayed true to herself and her music, and that's why I <3 Kelly Clarkson.  You go, gurl...  :)
