The 48-year-old is in stable condition after a thunderstorm rolled in over Island Beach State Park yesterday afternoon around 1:15 p.m.

"As he was leaving in the ambulance, he was responsive and interactive with everyone," park manager Ray Bukowski told WCAU TV.

Environmental Protection Department spokesman Lawrence Hajna tells the Asbury Park Press that the beach in the process of evacuating the beach because of a fast-moving thunderstorm Tuesday when  the unidentified man's fishing pole was struck by lightning.

Hajna told the newspaper that it's not clear if the man was already leaving the beach or was still near the water. The man could not feel his lower extremities after the hit.

The man remained Tuesday night at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in stable condition.
